Monument is a word that exists in English and French with almost the same range of meanings broadly to do with commemoration and memory, grandeur and endurance, hubris and impact. It has been chosen to provide an overall theme for a series of inter-connected exhibitions of contemporary art in the cross-channel region of England and France. The whole Monument project has been put together as a response to the centenary commemorations of the start of the First World War and the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings.
