The exhibition "Yes, but is it performable? Further Investigations into the Performative Paradox" brings to Graz international artists who are exploring topical questions related to the performative with an aim to present new works in activating dialogical juxtaposition to works by historically formative forerunners. This elaborate experiment developes gradually, with new works entering the exhibition each week during the exhibition period while the settings of the performances playing out in the exhibition space remain in the room as objects. The exhibition questions the ability to separate the artist from the artwork and shows performance in its ephemeral dual effect of being both “artificial” and “real.” The essential question is whether the binarity already presumed to inhere the performative – active (performer) versus passive (audience) – informs the performance, or does it instead contribute to overcoming this binary effect? In the exhibition, this question is examined in two ways: on the one hand, as immediately experienceable in the performances, and on the other, deduced through an observation of its remaining traces in the room.

A publication will accompany the exhibition and during steirischer herbst, once a week performances take place.
